Background

In alignment with the People for 2030 and the People Development Strategy, the Talent Development Unit (TDU) at Office of Human Resources (OHR) part of the Bureau for Management Services (BMS), is committed to further strengthening an impactful people development experience by creating ample opportunities and incentives for personnel to learn and upskill so that they can do their best work in their current roles and grow in their careers and strengthening the culture of learning and growth in UNDP

In this regard, BMS/OHR/TDU is seeking in-person People Development interns to support the implementation of the People for 2030 Strategy, and the People Development Strategy (2024-25). 

This is a generic job vacancy: We are looking for People Development interns with experience and knowledge in at least one of following areas of:  Onboarding and People Management Development, Leadership Development, Capability Development, Career Development, Data and Knowledge Management, Evaluation, and/or Communication. 

Stipend: UNDP interns are provided a monthly stipend to cover costs associated to the internship. The stipend amount varies from duty station to duty station. The amount can also vary depending on if a selected candidate receives financial support from a nominating institution, related institution, or government. For Copenhagen, this stipend is an equivalent of $1000 per month (exact amount to be confirmed).

Starting Date of the Internship – Selected candidate(s) will be expected to start their internship in February/March 2025 or 1 July 2025, depending on the selected candidates’ choice and UNDP’s needs.

As a full member of the TDU team, the intern will:

  • Participate in in-house training opportunities as applicable.
  • Learn the structure, mechanisms, policies and practice areas of UNDP.
  • Participate in dedicated trainings and UNDP online learning tools.
  • Strengthen effective communication skills.
  • Participate in working groups.   
  • Network with approximately 2000 personnel from 11 UN organizations and programmes at UN City.

Duties and Responsibilities

Communications

  • Create and update communication materials such as graphics/videos/presentations for talent development programmes and social media outreach.
  • Maintain internal website information on talent development programmes and events.
  • Support the creation of Podcasts on UNDP’s talents (recording interviews and editing content).
  • Assist in creation and delivery of webinars using technology e.g. Zoom/ MS TEAMS.

Programme Management, Design, and Delivery

  • Assist in tasks related to programme management including enrollment, reporting, tracking, and responding to learning queries.
  • Assist the team in the design and execution of capacity gap or learning needs analysis organization process flow and data analysis.
  • Incorporate adult learning theory, visual design principles and accessibility guidelines to design and develop interactive eLearning modules/online training materials.
  • Assess and curate talent development content on various platforms (e.g. Coursera, LinkedIn Learning.).
  • Conduct research on topics related to talent and organizational development e.g. identify suitable digital learning technologies, platforms, and tools (artificial intelligence, virtual and augmented reality).

Monitoring and Evaluation

  • Support in the monitoring and evaluation of learning interventions using tools such as: MS Forms for surveys, and Excel for creating evaluation documents.
  • Assist in developing high quality and interactive dashboards in Power BI.

Knowledge Management

  • Update and maintain the Talent Development Hub using SharePoint, Stream, SharePoint List.
  • Provide automatic solutions by using Power Automate and Power APPs.

Background

UNDP’s Istanbul Regional Hub (IRH) is an advisory hub for the Europe and CIS region, tasked with providing policy and programmatic support to UNDP’s development activities. The IRH works towards increasing the impact of UNDP’s activities by assisting Country Offices in developing country-level initiatives through advisory services and technical support and by implementing regional-level projects in partnership with a wide range of partners. The Bureau of External Relations and Advocacy (BERA) is responsible for positioning UNDP as the world’s leading global development agency, promoting its global authority and thought leadership on sustainable development and the interconnected issues of poverty, inequality, and climate change. BERA leads and supports UNDP in building and nurturing strategic relationships and alliances essential to achieving its mission. Creating strong political and financial backing for UNDP by providing partners and supporters with a clear understanding of what UNDP does and how our mission, capabilities and flagship services relate to them. The Bureau leads UNDP’s work on innovative and diversified partnerships and ways of financing the Decade of Action to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. The Innovative Digital Partnerships (IDP) Unit within the Bureau of External Relations and Advocacy (BERA) of UNDP is pleased to announce the creation of multiple internship opportunities to support the new and ongoing activities related to partnership with Samsung Mobile. Since 2019, Samsung and The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) have been collaborating on advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through the Samsung Global Goals app and the Generation17 initiative.

UNDP and Samsung have co-designed, launched, and implemented initiatives related to the SDGs with a particular focus on Youth Empowerment and Education using digital technologies. In August 2019, the Samsung Global Goals App was launched in 2 languages, subsequently expanding to more than 80 languages and countries today. The Samsung Global Goals app offers mobile phone users the opportunity to familiarize themselves with all 17 SDGs and their impact on communities worldwide. Through the app, users actively contribute to the achievement of these Global Goals by learning about each goal and making direct donations to UNDP to support its ongoing development work. With the app now installed on approximately 300 million Samsung devices globally it has significantly expanded UNDP’s global outreach. In 2020, Generation17 was born. It is an initiative that leverages the collective power of Samsung and UNDP to amplify the voices of young people, inspire change, and pave the way for a better future for us all. Combining UNDP’s youth and policy expertise with Samsung’s global scale and Galaxy technology, Generation17 aims to empower young leaders worldwide by providing mentorship, networking opportunities and technology, so they can mobilize their communities for the Global Goals.

BERA is looking for a reliable, motivated student or recent graduate to join our team in the near term, who is available to work approximately 20 hours per week for the next 8-10 weeks.

The intern must be a resourceful self-starter who thrives in a rapidly evolving context and will be able to work effectively in a demanding work environment. He/she will possess excellent attention to detail, follow through, and demonstrate advanced writing skills. Candidates with a strong interest and/or experience in communication, and who have advanced communication skills in Spanish, and/or French are preferred.

Archipelagic and Island States (AIS), with their vast ocean territory, face common development challenges that inhibit their ability to live prosperously and grow sustainably. Many of them are facing existential threats that include climate change, natural disasters, marine plastic debris, and unsustainable marine activities. Failing to protect the ocean ecosystem and address climate change will have catastrophic social and economic effects on these countries. 
 
Around 70% of the earth’s surface is covered by oceans, which account for 97% of all water on the planet. It provides humanity with numerous ecosystem services including nutrition, shipping and trade routes, and cultural services (e.g. recreation, education and traditional cultural practices). These ecosystem services greatly contribute to the global economy, with approximately three billion people, women and men, relying on the ocean and coastal regions for their livelihoods, generating around USD 3 trillion annually. This has led to a high population concentration in coastal regions, with 40% of the global population (~2.4 billion individuals) residing within 100 km of the coastline.
 
The range of coastal and maritime industries that enable the ocean economy to thrive have also begun to compromise their present and future life, as irreversible changes to the marine ecosystem are triggered by anthropogenic impacts on the marine environment.
 
 Some of these impacts include changes caused by climate change, such as the increased occurrence of extreme weather events, ocean acidification, rise in sea level, and loss of important coastal and marine ecosystems. These rapid changes to coastal and marine areas have innumerable negative effects on society, even more so on women and children. According to several UN organizations, women and children are 14 times more likely to die or get injured in natural disasters because of unequal access to resources. Women also account for half of the workforce in the aquaculture sector but only earn 64% of what men earn. It is why achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is very important for Archipelagic and Island States. 
 
The pathway towards inclusive and environmentally sustainable development must be built upon Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI). It is considered a central element to achieving sustainable development goals as it has the ability to trigger transformative actions by reshaping production, promoting equality and inclusion, and providing environmental benefits.
 
Some Archipelagic and Island States are in a better position than others to respond to the climate change and environmental challenges while many others do not have access to technologies that will allow them to adapt to the changing environment and implement sustainable practices to preserve their marine and coastal ecosystems. Therefore, it is important not only to have the required technologies but also to ensure its wide adoption. Without technology transfer and capacity building, many emerging Archipelagic and island countries will experience difficulties in implementing sustainable practices.
 
There are two further reasons why combating climate change and ocean ecosystems degradation require cooperation between all Archipelagic and Island States. First, some of the technologies that are required to decarbonize the economy are still not commercially viable for the market. Therefore, it is important to reach scale by having a wide adoption and reaching critical mass. 
 
Technology transfer and capacity building present an avenue to develop a close collaboration between Archipelagic and Island States, developed and developing. The collaboration in research and development and entrepreneurship are enabling the transfer of technology while at the same time creating trading opportunities between them. Secondly, climate change and ocean ecosystems degradation are transboundary, countries cannot solve the problems solely by actions within their own border, and it is almost impossible for a single country to have enough resources, financial and non-financial, to deal with them alone. 
 
It is why after the 5th of June 2017 at the Ocean Conference in New York City, a follow-up Conference on the Archipelagic and Island States (AIS) Forum was held in Jakarta on the 21st–22nd of November 2017. This resulted in a common understanding among participating countries that a forum could be an innovative vehicle for effectively addressing climate change and marine issues. In line with the 2030 Agenda and the Small Island Developing States Accelerated Modalities of Action (SAMOA) Pathway, the AIS Forum seeks to address the common challenges faced by Archipelagic and Island States, particularly the small developing ones that suffer the most from climate change even though they emit the least carbon into the atmosphere. 
 
The Forum is designed to include all Island States and Archipelagic countries regardless of their location, size, and level of development. According to the OECD, co-operation between developed and developing countries will create a synergy as they often possess different types of expertise/knowledge, data, and other resources that are valuable for discovering the solutions and for dealing with multiple challenges. There are regional initiatives that allow Island States to connect with and aid one another. However, a global initiative that brings together all Archipelagic and Island States
is yet to exist.


  

Duties and Responsibilities

Scope of Work

 

The National Project Manager (NPM) will be responsible to support the Project Implementing Partners in undertake day-to-day project management in accordance with the approved project document (Prodoc), GEF, and UNDP principles and procedures. The NPM will lead project management unit in Jakarta and ensure necessary supervision of the provincial and district coordinators, including the mobilization of all project inputs, supervision over project staff, consultants, and sub-contractors. Specifically, the NPM will be responsible for following tasks:

 

a. Manage and supervise the project team to ensure effective implementation and achievement through below activities:

 

  • Oversees the day-to-day project implementation and ensure achievement of targets as outlined in the project work plan;
  • Leads and supervises project team, builds team coherence and establishes clear roles and responsibilities among team members;
  • Mobilizes goods and services and other project inputs, including preparing ToRs for expert consultants, meetings and workshops;
  • Ensures that the quality of project inputs meet the expected standards and are sufficient to produce project outputs and targets;
  • Takes overall responsibility for the project and performs oversight roles for project compliance against the relevant government, and UNDP and for project management;
  • Develops/updates as necessary the project standard operating procedures in line with the government and UNDP seeks the board’s approval and takes responsibility for updating and revising it as necessary.
  • Manages critical issues, troubleshoots problems and develops solutions to the overall processes of project implementation; 
  • Consults with the project board for any issues that require their attention, including issues related to deviation from the approved work plans and its tolerance (e.g. deviation from the approved target and/or budget);
  • Performs NPM duties on UNDP’s Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) in web-based system (Quantum) in line with the Direct Implementation Modality‘s (DIM) manual and as outlined in the delegation of authority for NPM. 
  • Ensures effective monitoring of project performance and the preparation of high-quality and results oriented progress reports;
  • Ensures gender-related economic, environmental, and public research and analysis to contribute to the formulation of policies, programme interventions, procedures, guidelines, and tools.

 

b. Ensure effective planning, budgeting, and execution of the project through following taks: 

  • Prepares project’s annual and quarterly work plans and organizes project board meetings to obtain their approval;
  • Implements project work plan and ensures that the project remains within the tolerance level of the approved work plan;
  • Conducts regular monitoring to ensure achievement of targets in line with the annual work plan and that project implementation at all levels complies with the approved project Standard Operating Procedure (SoP);
  • Prepare and submit financial reports to UNDP on monthly and quarterly basis;
  • Prepares bi-annual project assurance reports (PARs) in line with the standard template and presents it to the project assurance team on a timely manner; 
  • Provides additional inputs and data for external project reports as necessary and required by the project assurance team; 
  • Organizes bi-annual project board meetings and reports to the project board on the project’s bi-annual and annual progress together with any issues that may require project board decisions; 
  • As required and directed by the project board, liaises with UNDP’s Quality Assurance, Reporting, and Evaluation (QARE) Unit to facilitate project review, reporting, and evaluation processes, and supports the conduct of such exercises under the overall management of the task manager as designated by UNDP QARE. 
  • To make sure implementation of gender equality accountability framework and Gender equality Results Based management at project level i.e. performance management, gender marker assignment in web-based system Quantum, reporting, etc.
  • Visit project sites as and when required to appraise project progress on the ground and validate written progress reports.

 

c. Create and nurture strategic partnerships and support to the implementation of resource mobilization

  • Establishes and maintains good working relationships with the relevant public and development partners who are the principal counterparts for the project; 
  • Initiates and maintains partnerships with development partners, government institutions, private sector, civil society and other stakeholders to contribute to the achievement of project results;
  • Builds project reputation for quality design, reliable delivery as well as integrity and accountability;  
  • Identifies and works with key partners/stakeholders to ensure synergies with other projects/initiatives and to avoid duplication of activities among actors; 
  • Identifies opportunities for mobilizing resources for the project, and prepares substantive briefs on possible areas of cooperation; and
  • In coordination with UNDP and other relevant Counterpart communications department, strengthens the communication of the project in order to communicate results, deepen stakeholder knowledge and buy-in to the project, and to facilitate resource mobilization for the project.

 

d. Facilitate knowledge building and management for and from the project implementation.

  • Identifies best practices and lessons learnt from the project and from other initiatives that can be helpful to the project in achieving its goals and objectives;
  • Organizes and delivers trainings for the operations/project staff on project/programme management issues;
  • Conducts internal capacity building training for project staff to facilitate appropriate management and timely delivery of project outputs;
  • Leads in generating knowledge products such as best practices and lessons learnt for knowledge sharing; and
  • Contributes to knowledge networks and communities of practice
  • Conducts internal capacity building training for project staff to facilitate appropriate management and timely delivery of project outputs including in gender analysis and gender mainstreaming
  • Effective contribution to learning and knowledge sharing in gender analysis and gender mainstreaming

 

e. The incumbent of the position should avoid any kind of discriminatory behavior including gender discrimination and ensure that:

 

  • Human rights and gender equality is prioritized as an ethical principle within all actions;
  • Activities are designed and implemented in accordance with “Social and Environmental Standards of UNDP.
  • Any kind of diversities based on ethnicity, age, sexual orientation, disability, religion, class, gender are respected within all implementations including data production;
  • Differentiated needs of women and men are considered;
  • Inclusive approach is reflected within all actions and implementations, in that sense an enabling and accessible setup in various senses such as disability gender language barrier is created;
  • Necessary arrangements to provide gender parity within all committees, meetings, trainings etc.

 

4. Institutional Arrangement

 

The NPM will be based at Menara Thamrin UNDP Office, under the overall guidance and supervision Head of Environment or delegated staff, the NPM has the authority to run the project on a day-to-day basis. The NPM is responsible for making the day-to-day decisions on project implementation and ensures that the project produces the results specified in the project document to the required standards of quality and within the specified time and cost

 

The primary reporting responsibility of the incumbent is to the Head of Environment Unit or delegated staff. Additionally, the National Project Manager is responsible for ensuring smooth flow of information and services in UNDP and the Project Management Unit (PMU).

The unsustainable management of globally traded commodity crops (cacao, coffee and oil palm), and their expansion into forest areas, are leading to major impacts on globally important biodiversity, the degradation of soil and waterresources, the loss of carbon stocks, and the degradation of watersheds that are vital for maintaining water flows torice production areas. Rice production is itself a source of globally significant environmental impacts, in the form ofthe contamination of soil and globally- important aquatic ecosystems due to excessive and inappropriate use of agricultural chemicals, and the generation of methane (a potent greenhouse gas) from flooded paddy systems.

A narrow focus on the production of globally-traded cash crops by farmers is environmentally and socially unsustainable – even in the case of perennial crops such as coffee and cacao that have the potential to yield environmental benefits if appropriately managed – because of the volatility of global markets for these crops and their vulnerability to the effects of global climate change. A large number of major global value chain actors have committed to sustainable sourcing of the products that they trade, in order to comply with corporate social and environmental responsibility goals and to satisfy consumer requirements for sustainable production. This presents farmers with a major potential source of market-based incentives for sustainable production, but at present their ability to take advantage of this opportunity is constrained by their disconnection from these “green” value chains and their limited technical capacities to satisfy their requirements in terms of environmental standards, product quality and reliability of supply.

Despite significant policy commitments to sustainability by the Government of Indonesia, capacities, knowledge, tools, regulatory instruments and incentives for putting these into practice are still inadequately developed, and the agricultural and environmental sectors continue to be highly compartmentalized, lacking the integrated vision that is required if social and economic development and landscape management are to be sustainable.

With the funding support from the Global Environmental Faculty (GEF), the Government of Indonesia, led by the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs and with technical support from UNDP and FAO is preparing the full-sizeproject implementation entitled “Strengthening sustainability in commodity and food systems, land restoration andland use governance through integrated landscape management for multiple benefits in Indonesia (FOLUR)”. The project aimed to ensure sustainable value chains of palm oil, coffee and cocoa via application of a comprehensive land use approach linking biodiversity conservation, restoration and production at scale. The project will assist the country to address above-mentioned development challenges through four areas of interventions as follow:

  1. Development of integrated landscape management systems
  2. Promotion of sustainable food production practices and responsible value chains
  3. Conservation and restoration of natural habitats
  4. Management, Coordination, Collaboration, and M&E

The project will be implemented in 5 provinces (jurisdictions) and 5 districts (pilot landscapes): Aceh (Central Aceh),North Sumatra (Mandailing Natal), West Kalimantan (Sanggau), South Sulawesi (Luwu) and West Papua (Sorong). The project will be commenced for full implementation in February 2022 for 72 months.

This position will support event activities on field level in all 5 FOLUR project sites under the overall guidance of National Project Manager of FOLUR Project. He/she will work in close collaboration with  the FOLUR project personnel to exchange information and ensure consistent service delivers.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Support the project team to ensure effective project planning, budgeting and  implementation focusing on achievement of the following results:

  • Assist in the coordination of project planning and preparation work for, typically, a medium size and complex component of the project initiatives;
  • Compiles, summarizes, and presents basic information/data on specific project and related topics or issues to FOLUR Project.;
  • Reviews project documents, especially cost plans/budgets, for completeness and compliance with relevant rules and procedures prior to submission for final approval and signature; identifies inconsistencies; distributes project documents to relevant parties upon approval.
  • Implement project standard operating procedures in line with the government and UNDP’s regulations;
  • Support in assessing and analyzing current policies of local government in their respective site to provide policy mapping in support to sustainable targeted commodity in their respective site;

2. Support to the effective progress of project implementation:

  • Collecting data for targeted farmers by name and addresses to ease in providing direct and indirect project intervention in their respective site;
  • Support  the preparation of project reports, in line with the monitoring and reporting guidelines and present it to the project  team  in timely manner;
  • Providing assistante regarding various studies implemented by academic consultants, such as but not limited to beneficieries analysis, Integrated Landscape Management Plan development at provincial and Comodities Action Plan in district level;
  • Provide administrative support for preparation of high quality and results oriented progress reports;

3. Provides administrative support to the Project Management Unit focusing on achievement of the following results:

  • Provision of general office assistance such as response to complex information requests and inquiries; reviews, logs and routes incoming correspondence; establishment of filling system and maintenance files/records; organization of meetings, workshops; routine administrative tasks, including maintaining attendance records,  etc.
  • Drafts correspondence on periodic reports, briefing notes, graphic and statistical summaries, accounting spreadsheets, etc.

4. Support strategic partnerships, communication and support to the implementation of resource mobilization:

  • Updated database of the relevant public and development partners private sector, civil society and other stakeholders who are counterparts for the project;
  • Serving as on-field liaison to connect FOLUR Project with provincial and district level government partners, local NGOs, private sector, and local communities in their respective site;

5. Supports knowledge building and knowledge sharing focusing on achievement of the following results:

  • Participation in the trainings for the operations/ projects staff.
  • Synthesis of lessons learned and best practices in project management support function
  • Contributions to knowledge networks and communities of practice.

6. The incumbent of the position should avoid any kind of discriminatory behavior including gender discrimination and ensure that:
