Background

CORPORATE BACKGROUND

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is the UN’s global development network, an organization advocating for change and connecting countries to knowledge, experience, and resources to help people build a better life. UNDP Cambodia Country Office (CO) works in partnership with the Royal Government of Cambodia (RGC), non-government organizations, civil society organizations, community-based organizations, multilateral aid agencies, bilateral donors, and the private sector to accelerate the achievement of Cambodia Sustainable Development Goals (CSDGs) and other national development priorities as set out in the Pentagonal Strategy for realizing the national vision 2050. 

INTERNSHIP OFFICE BACKGROUND

In Cambodia, the UNDP Country Programme Document 2024-2028 (CPD) identified three transformational shifts as priorities for support during the next five years. The first shift is toward an economic growth model that accelerates inclusive growth, economic diversification, and human development. The second shift involves championing just energy transition, climate action and nature-based solutions as the foundation for national wealth, well-being, and resilience to shocks. The third shift is towards strengthening institutions, civic space, and participation as enablers for inclusive growth, access to rights and equal opportunities for all, whilst ensuring that the society at large is using the full potential of digital transformation. The CPD is aligned to national priorities and policies, particularly Cambodia’s vision 2050 and the Pentagonal Strategy-Phase 1 2024-2028.

Areas of internship include:

  • Programmes and Projects
  • Operations (Administration, Finance, Human Resources, Procurement and Information Communication Technology – ICT)
  • Coordination
  • Communications
  • Management and Oversight

Duration

  • Internship assignments vary in length according to the academic requirements of the intern, as well as the needs of UNDP. Assignments normally last a minimum of six weeks and a maximum of six months. An internship may last up to nine months if the intern can demonstrate that it will award them an educational credit for a course.
  • Internship assignments completed as part of national service obligations or a postgraduate professional traineeship program may last up to 12 months.  
  • Internship assignments are available on a part-time and full-time basis.

Required documents:

The successful applicants are to submit the following documents to HR Unit prior to the start of assignment:

  • Duly completed UNDP internship application form;
  • Most recent resume or curriculum vitae (CV);
  • A letter from university confirming the current enrollment and expected graduation date or a copy of university degree if graduated;
  • University transcript;
  • Certificate of good health;
  • A proof of medical insurance (inpatient and outpatient) covering the internship period;
  • A copy of national passport or national ID card;
  • Photo (white background).

*Note: The above documents will be requested from applicant after the completion of intern’s recruitment, therefore, it doesn’t require at the time of application submission (except resume/cv).

Duties and Responsibilities

The main duties that the intern will be expected to carry out are:

  • Supporting in conducting research and analysis;
  • Assisting in the preparation of various documentation and reports;
  • Assisting in the cataloguing of information;
  • Assisting in the organization of conferences, workshops, meetings or other collaborative events;  
  • Contributing in the development of communication and knowledge product and visibility promotion;
  • Supporting and contributing to oversight activities (evaluation/audit/spotcheck plan for projects).

Other competencies and attitude:

  • Ability to work effectively under pressure in a team and in a multicultural environment;
  • Positive attitude towards learning and sharing;
  • Ability to perform a variety of repetitive and routine tasks and duties related to event management;
  • Ability to organize time, balance workload and complete multiple tasks by establishing priorities;
  • Demonstrates ability to quickly shift from one task to another to meet multiple support needs; 
  • Establishes, builds, and maintains effective working relationships with colleagues and stakeholders to facilitate the provision of support.

Required Skills and Experience

Education: 

Applicants to the UNDP internship programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (such as bachelor’s degree or equivalent);
  • Be enrolled in a postgraduate degree programme (such as a master’s programme, or higher);
  • Have recently graduated with a university degree as defined above and, if selected, must start the internship within one-year of graduation;
  • Be enrolled in a postgraduate professional traineeship program and undertake the internship as part of this programme.

Skills and Experience:

  • Good communication skills, including writing emails, reports, meeting minutes and summaries;
  • Experience in coordinating multiple stakeholders, including through meetings and events;
  • Good knowledge of Microsoft Office software, Windows 10 and Mac operating system; 
  • Knowledge and experience with communication Apps such as Zoom, Microsoft Team, Google Meet.

Language skills:

  • Fluent in Khmer and English, both spoken and written for national intern.
  • Fluent in English, both spoken and written for international intern.

INTERNSHIP CONDITIONS

  • UNDP will not pay interns for the internship but will provide an in-person stipend in the amount of USD 234.37 monthly in accordance with the provisions of the UNDP internship policy; all other expenses connected with it will be borne by the intern or the intern’s sponsoring Government or institution;
  • UNDP accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship. The intern will provide proof of enrolment in a health insurance plan and a medical certificate of good health prior to the start of the internship;
  • The internship cannot be foreshortened for the purposes of taking up another position with UNDP;
  • UNDP accepts no responsibility for any claims by any parties where the loss of or damage to their property, death or personal injury was caused by their actions or omission of action during the internship;
  • The interns are responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging their travel to and from the duty station (if applicable) where the internship will be performed;
  • There is no expectation of employment following the internship;
  • Interns are not staff members and may not represent UNDP in any official capacity;
  • Interns need to obtain financing for subsistence and make own arrangements for internship, travel, accommodation, etc.
