Role’s Purpose:

The Portfolio Manager is the primary link between anchor firms and the project. He/she will diagnose the constraints on business growth and develop a clear action plan to address these constraints. He/she will monitor the firms’ progress against clear benchmarks and help the Regional Director determine if the businesses are succeeding or failing. Additionally, the Portfolio Manager will work to support the anchor firm in their efforts and provide a conduit for the provision of specialist expertise as required.

 

Objectives and Duties

Identify possible anchor firms.
Engage with the firms’ managers to diagnose constraints on business growth.
Negotiate a “Deal Note” spelling out the respective responsibilities of the firms and the project to address those constraints, define milestones, and state outcomes.
Maintain a continuing relationship with firms, providing needed business development services and technical assistance.
Identify and arrange specialized technical assistance and financial support provided by the project to the firm.
Work with the regional M&E Coordinator and Senior M&E Specialist and Gender & Youth Specialist to determine whether anticipated results are being achieved by the firm and project in collaboration, and if not, how the project and firm should adapt.

The AVC-HVC project works with anchor firms nationwide to reverse market failures, strengthen backward and forward linkages, drive growth, and create jobs for men, women, and youth along the fruit and nuts, high-value horticulture, spices, and medicinal crops value chains. The Project contributes positive and measurable impacts to the sectors and will ensure that local market actors are involved at every stage of the value chain.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree with 5 years’ experience in private sector/business community related to high value crops.
Hands-on experience in the private sector/business community related to high value crops.
Demonstrated business sense and analytical skills, with the ability to spell out clients’ key problems and how to solve them.
Relationship management skills including problem-solving, people skills, commitment to client firms, and business community networks.
Bachelor’s in Business, Agriculture, Social Science, or other relevant field; Master’s preferred.
Travel to the provinces in the region is required.
