Senior Production Specialist (Kabul, Afghanistan)


Job Description

The Senior Production Specialist will: 

  • Provide the overall Organizational Planning process and design of an efficient production Plan at the Provincial or Regional level to produce export quality products. 

  • Coordinate closely with and support the Horticulture Master Training Specialist both on technical as well as practical trainings in the field.  

  • Review training manuals, extension bulletins, and Farm to Market Guides used in trainings which are given to beneficiaries by the Provincial Sourcing Officers and Training Specialist before implementation in the area. 

  • Assess farmer training and development needs as well as practical field activities of Provincial Sourcing officers and Master trainers in the targeted provinces and provide appropriate orientation, training, supervision, and support as required. 

  • Supervise the field activities of all Sourcing Officers based on the visiting schedule and field activities, field days, and demonstrations (methods and result demonstration) plan of the Provincial Sourcing Officers.  

  • Assist the provincial Master Trainer in developing his/her training Work Plans; designing their schedule for visiting farmers based on a regular visiting pattern, and in training the farmers and the members of the farmers groups following the Crop Calendars and Training Calendar. 

  • Keep the Production Director and Sr. Marketing Specialist updated with current information regarding all major field activities, including all training activities and practical demonstration methods used to improve farmer retention capacity.  

  • Assist field staff in preparing technical reports, weekly and monthly CBARD reports which are disseminated to UNDP and INL and coordinating production activities with the Marketing Team. An example is inviting marketing staff to participate in Quality Improvement Training of Orchard Crops to satisfy export standards.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor University degree in Agriculture or related field (horticulture). M.Sc degree in Agriculture or related field is desired. 

  • Demonstrated knowledge of production strategies to increase both quality and yields of high-value fruit, vegetable, and nut crops.  

  • Understanding of traditional production practices and their impediments to improved farm output. Substantial working knowledge of improved farming practices such high-density cropping patterns for orchard crops, optimal timing and use of fertilizer, pest control measures, including IPM, and irrigation applications based on crop needs.   

  • Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible working experience in the field of production management, Research & Extension methodologies, Training of Trainers (TOT), Farmer Field Schools (FFS), and Farmer training. 

  • Both spoken and written fluency in the English language. 

  • Excellent written and oral communication, leadership and interpersonal skills. Experience developing and conducting formal PowerPoint presentations to donors or other institutions.  

  • Experience conducting informal verbal presentations to local businesses such as traders, food processors, agri-input dealers, and farmer groups.
