Position Overview

The Senior Nutrition Advisor will work with other technical advisors and the field operations team to ensure an integrated project, with a strong nutrition support across the continuum of prevention to treatment of acute malnutrition. This Senior Advisor will work to ensure evidence based sound nutrition programming interventions and approaches are integrated through the project.

Responsibilities

Work with the MoPH’s Public Nutrition Department (PND), in collaboration with NHTAP, leveraging IHSAN’s work to ensure integration of nutrition at every touch point within the continuum of care
Network with relevant organizations and government counterparts through active participation and leadership in technical working groups
Support the design and development of formative and implementation research to generate lessons learned and advance agency learning agenda
Expand the integration of nutrition approaches through development and promotion of evidence-based tools and materials – e.g., training curricula, job aids, mobile applications.
Remain abreast of emerging issues in nutrition and nutrition/integration in order to incorporate them into programming and research.
Identify opportunities to integrate evidence-based nutrition care at every touchpoint, leveraging existing tools and assets within the health system.
Ensure integration of nutrition indicators, measures and data in relevant assessments, baselines etc
Work with team members and partners to adapt and expand existing service delivery models that include nutrition components.
Ensure the integration and promotion of nutrition programming within the overarching SBC strategy, with clear targeting for different population segments.
Work with the SBC team to develop targeted messages to promote positive home care and prevention of malnutrition and include topics such as breastfeeding, complementary feeding, routine supplementation, handwashing, sanitation, prevention and management of diarrhea.
Support a strategy to strengthen facilities in each city to provide inpatient and outpatient integrated management of acute malnutrition.
Provide capacity building to sites to operationalize national guidelines and SOPs.
Work closely with field coordination teams across cities to ensure consistency of quality in roll out and operationalization of nutrition integration and strengthening in the project.

Interventions aim to increase demand, access and quality of health services. Lead by Jhpiego and implemented by a dynamic consortium of organizations, UHI is implemented in five cities in Afghanistan – Kabul, Herat, Mazar-e-Sharif, Jalalabad and Kandahar.

Job Requirements

Job Requirements:

Graduate degree in public health, medicine, social sciences or other health allied degree  
Minimum 10 years’ experience working in global health and nutrition   
Strong technical understanding of nutrition, evidence-based approaches – both nutrition-specific (ICYF, complementary feeding, maternal nutrition) and nutrition-sensitive (WASH, ECD, food security) – with experience in emergency nutrition and health systems strengthening preferred
Expertise in the development and production of curricula, tools, and products to support nutrition interventions and programming; including a strong understanding of social and behavior change (SBC) approaches and tools.
Experience working with local partners – government, facilities, civil society.
Experience with nutrition program monitoring and key performance indicators
Results oriented and strong decision-making skills  
Understanding of performance improvement and training techniques 
Excellent verbal, written and presentation skills 
Ability to work in a complex environment with multiple tasks, short deadlines and intense pressure to perform   
Ability to travel to provinces at least 20% of the time 
Fluency in English language
